Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan

EcoPlan provided technical and engagement support for the Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan —  a transformative, community-driven roadmap for the future of the Squamish Nation. Rooted in Squamish culture and values, this long-term plan reimagines governance, development, and sustainability through a deeply Indigenous lens—prioritizing the lived experiences of the community over conventional planning frameworks. The plan is noted for its rigorous planning analysis, groundbreaking engagement methods and compelling graphic communication. The process for developing and compiling the plan integrated cultural protocols and metaphor with contemporary analytical planning and visual approaches.

For example, engagement included community storytelling, digital and in-person forums, and iterative “weaving” sessions—the plan actively involves citizens in shaping their future. Over 1,500 community contributions informed the final strategy, ensuring that every voice mattered in the process. And its planning framework is structured around Four Feelings—Trust, Security, Purpose, and Belonging rather than more typical planning objectives. All of this makes Úxwumixw 2050 both practical and deeply meaningful to Squamish People.

Ultimately it is about turning vision into action. Implementation of Úxwumixw 2050 is already underway, with the plan serving as a foundation for governance, policy, and economic development. It has been fully integrated into Squamish Nation’s Council Strategic Plans, department work plans, and new employee training. It is also influencing external partnerships, as local municipalities incorporate its vision into their own planning processes.
